Newcastle have already begun planning for life in the Premier League; The Sun has reported that they are monitoring the progress of Napoli star, Ezequiel Lavezzi. The 24-year-old striker has netted 17 times in 77 appearances for his club and is nicknamed ‘The Tank’ on account of his physical strength.
The Argentine international has been the subject of Premier League interest before is and is believed to want a move away from his club in the summer. He is likely to cost in excess of £5million and given the level of interest there has been in him previously, Napoli may hope to start a bidding war in the summer if he is determined to leave. Newcastle’s case may be helped by the fact that two of Lavezzi’s international teammates are currently at the club and both Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini will speak positively about the new atmosphere surrounding the club.
Newcastle’s immediate priority is to secure promotion to the Premier League, but their fine start to the season makes it practical for the club to start planning for the future. They are fortunate that they will be able to attract some star players to the club given that it is still seen as a big club in many quarters.
In other news, Newcastle’s proposed move for Sheffield United’s Matthew Kilgallon may have to wait until the summer when his contract runs out. The two clubs had agreed a fee but the player is willing to see out his contract with United.
