What does the future hold for Umar Sadiq?

What does the future hold for Umar Sadiq?

The Rangers era under Steven Gerrard has got off to a solid start this season as the Gers currently sit fourth in the league, two points off Celtic and seven points off Hearts who currently lead the league.

Rangers had an early start to the season as they played their first game at the end of July in the Europa League and continued their run in Europe to qualify for the group stages and drew their first game against Villarreal. The Spanish side was a tough team to open up their European campaign but the Glasgow side managed to pull off an impressive 2-2 draw.

After a poor season last year, Rangers gave Gerrard a host of new players to try and improve the team and compete with Celtic for the title. One such player Rangers worked hard to bring in was Roma forward, Umar Sadiq.

Labelled a prodigy when he scored his scored his first Serie A goal at the age of 17 in Roma’s 2-0 win over Genoa, the Nigerian striker has struggled to live up to his potential since making his debut. The Nigerian striker is still incredibly raw and still has a lot to learn in terms of his finishing.

Last season the 21-year-old striker scored five goals in 12 games for Dutch side NAC Breda but still has not matched his 26 goals he scored in the Primavera A league for Spezia three seasons ago. Up front, Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty are ahead of the 21-year-old and will likely start most of the games in the league. However, when it comes to Europe Saidq could feature heavily, especially considering the Rangers solid start to their European campaign.

As it stands, Sadiq still has a lot of work to do to contribute for Rangers and has still yet to convince the fans that he could be a quality player for the team this season. There’s no doubt that his height, build and pace could thrive in Scotland but as of yet he has not made an impact on Gerrard’s side.

With Rangers fighting on two fronts, Saidq must step up in Europe and provide some quality for Gerrard when Morelos and Lafferty are unavailable. As it stands, the Nigerian’s place is on the bench but he could prove to be a vital squad player as the season wears on.
