All associated with Sheffield United will have received a huge boost on Wednesday as both Billy Sharp and Oliver Norwood signed new contracts at the club.
Both spoke to Sheffield United with Sharp saying: “This was a no brainer for me, personally. I’ve said previously about wanting to finish my career here and the talks were pretty simple.”
Meanwhile Norwood was also elated as he said: “I’m delighted to commit my future to a club that has had the best of me, but there is so much more to come as I continue to mature and grow as a player, it’s not as though I’m going to lose my pace!”
This is a great bit of news for the side, to keep their two leaders who have clocked up 267 appearances between them, (since Sharp rejoined when the Blades were in League One in 2015), will be a great boost for manager Chris Wilder. Indeed, they are two very experienced heads who know the culture of the club very well and they can be a great influence on the rest of the squad as they push for the European qualification, something that they would never have dreamed of when they were promoted last summer.
As it stands, they sit in seventh, level on points with Wolves in sixth who are in the last Europa League qualification spot available and only five points from a Champions League place, via BBC Sport.
Wilder emphasised the importance of these players, in particular Sharp as he spoke to the Daily Mail and said: “He has an important part to play – and has played an important part with the pressure he has put on the strikers.
“From my point of view, the example he has set, and is setting, and the influence he has on those young players is huge.”
Clearly this news has gone down well with those linked with the club including the supporters with tweets such as this one from BA Analytics praising the new deals on social media:
Absolutely brilliant news!
Literally on field leaders both comitting long term. Fabric and backbone of club protected. Culture continues.
So much to love about this not to mention Norwood is playing some of best football of his life and Sharp may still end up as our top scorer https://t.co/AunBZ85ZgI

There is no doubt that this business could arguably be two of the best signings the club will make this summer. With their experience and leadership, this news could be the catalyst to seeing the Blades achieve European qualification in their first season back in England’s top flight since 2006/07.
