That is still very good for a team who were promoted only last year, but the fact that the mood around the club is one of slight disappointment highlights how great the season has been as they battled for European qualification.
Over the course of the season, players like Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick and Oliver Norwood have signed new deals the make sure they are at the club next term, but Chris Wilder has provided an update on some of the players who are yet to negotiate a new deal.
Speaking after the game at Bramall Lane yesterday, according to BBC Radio Sheffield, via Sheffield United News, Wilder said, “There might be a couple that leave. There might be a couple of contract situations that don’t get sorted out and players don’t come to agreements.
“We have to look after the football club on that front.”
There is no worry that they will leave for free in the summer due to the length of their current deals, but with Basham and Lundstram both having contracts which expire in June 2021, the club will want to tie them down for longer so that they don’t lose them on a free transfer if they do want to leave next year.
Hopefully there will be an agreement with those players when the season ends but with Wilder doing so well with this squad, he will not want discontent or players to leave, so the ongoing negotiations could be crucial for Sheffield United.
It looks like some players could leave but, with only one game left in the Premier League, supporters will have to wait another few weeks to see what changes occur at Bramall Lane in the transfer window.
