Sheffield United have bolstered their squad with a few new additions, but they are not done yet and it seems like there is one more position Chris Wilder feels like he needs to strengthen.
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the first game of the 2020/21 season which saw the Blades lose 2-0 to Wolves and ahead of their Carabao Cup tie against Burnley, Wilder said: “We’re trying to (sign a striker) – discussions and enquiries as well. It’s an area where I believe we need to bring somebody into compete, especially with losing Lys (Mousset) now as well for a while.
“We need somebody at the top of the pitch to complement the players that we’ve got. That’s where a lot of things are decided, at the top of the pitch. We need to make sure we’ve got options.”
If the squad was fully fit, then the need for a striker might not be as important as it possibly is now, but with Wilder uncertain as to when Mousset will return, they should definitely bring in another forward to make sure they don’t have a very bad start to the season following that first defeat.
Billy Sharp is a known finisher, but to be starting up front at the age of 34 following last season in the division when he only scored three goals highlights that Wilder needs more strength in that area. Hopefully McBurnie scores more than last season, but to get six was still a decent debut tally, he just needs a reliable goalscorer alongside him.
The problem the club currently have at the moment as well is the fact that they are without Mousset, is that their forwards are all very similar as they aren’t the most mobile, so Wilder is definitely right when he says the club needs someone to compliment their forwards.
Hopefully a signing could happen sooner rather than later as the Blades have a big league game against Aston Villa on Monday night and they will want to get their first points on the board to remove a bit of pressure from their shoulders.
