Sheffield United are probably happy that they have a very short break until their next fixture, as their last two games have seen them only pick up one point and score no goals against Newcastle and Aston Villa.
They play Manchester United on Wenesday and one player certain to be missing is defender John Egan, who will be suspended after picking up a red card against Newcastle.
There have also been some injury struggles for the Blades and supporters would have been happy to see John Fleck return yesterday, but Chris Wilder has provided an update on other injuries before the trip to Old Trafford.
Wilder spoke in his press conference this morning about the fitness of Jack O’Connell and Phil Jagielka and said (via The Star): “A daily conversation I have all the time with the medical department over when players can come back, someone who wasn’t in the know said he’s out for the season but he isn’t, he’s progressing well and I’ll have that conversation again.
“Hopeful that he’ll (Jack O’Connell) be close, see how today goes, important player for us and has been part of the group that’s done great in both ways, with and without the ball.
“I’m sure with the timing in terms of lead up to the game he’ll (Jagielka) be fit and ready. He blocked a shot on Saturday and turned an ankle but he’ll be OK, with John missing he’s the obvious one to come in.”
O’Connell would really lift the squad if he could return as he had played in every game of the Premier League season before the break and this highlights that he has been vital to the side reaching seventh place in the Premier League.
Meanwhile with Egan suspended and O’Connell possibly injured, it will be vital that Jagielka will be fit for the fixture, so hopefully his injury isn’t too bad.
