Twenty-eight games later and the Blades have already passed the 40 point mark that is seen as the benchmark if you want to stay in the division. Not only are they already on 43 points, they are now looking further up the league as they sit in seventh, level on points with Wolves in sixth who sit in the last Europa League qualification place, via BBC Sport. They are also only five points from Chelsea who currently occupy the last Champions League place in fourth.
A major reason for their success this term has been their defence, which manager Chris Wilder has turned into a solid unit and John Egan has been at the heart of that backline.
The centre-back has only missed one Premier League game this season, and his stats in his 27 appearances stand out as on average he has managed 1.3 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 4.9 clearances per game, via WhoScored. He is so crucial to the Blades’ team, with his fellow centre-halves Chris Basham and Jack O’Connell given a license to bomb forward it leaves extra responsibility on the Irish international to keep things tight at the back.
Will Egan stay at the Blades or fancy a move to Everton?

His impact has helped the South Yorkshire outfit keep the joint-third most clean sheets in the Premier League, (10), whilst conceding the second fewest goals (25), with only league leaders Liverpool shipping fewer.
His performances have not gone unnoticed either, with fellow Premier League side Everton, managed by one of the most decorated managerial names in modern football in Carlo Ancelotti, heavily linked with the defender. With his valuation currently at £8.55 million on Transfermarkt, it will be interesting to see what the Blades’ price tag would be for the player, as he is a crucial part of the team so it would definitely take a lot more than that to take him away from Bramall Lane.
The Blades will resume their first for European football when the English top flight returns on 17 June, with Wilder’s side kicking the restart off with a game against Aston Villa. If they are to qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League then there is no doubt that they will need to maintain their strong defensive record and Egan will be absolutely crucial to that.
