At the beginning of the month, it was reported that Sheffield United were interested in Reading midfielder John Swift, and there is now an update on this possible transfer as the Blades look to battle other clubs for his signature.
According to the Sheffield Star, United will attempt to make contact with officials at the Madejski Stadium later this week, with confidence that they might be able to get him for a cut-price fee as the global pandemic has caused financial implications for football.
Recently-promoted Leeds United are also interested in the midfielder, so there might be a bidding war on the cards as the Blades rival their fellow Yorkshire club for the 25-year-old.
The Englishman, who came from Chelsea’s academy, has had a great season in the Championship as he has played 40 times and scored six goals whilst supplying 10 assists, per WhoScored. He also averages 1.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game, whilst at the other end of the pitch he averages 1.4 shots and 2.3 key passes per game, highlighting he is very good at breaking up opposition attacks as well as being an attacking threat himself, per WhoScored.
At just 25, Swift should be coming into the peak of his career soon, and to have such a great goal contribution record from midfield is something that Chris Wilder should love to have more of in his squad. John Fleck leads the way at Sheffield United when it comes to midfielders with goal contributions (five goals, three assists), via WhoScored, and Swift could add even more threat in that department.
Would Swift be a good signing for Wilder?
This move looks like a no-brainer as the Blades can get a young midfielder who is showing promise and, even though he is currently in the Championship, his statistics highlight that the potential to be a Premier League player is there and he can grow even more with a top-flight squad around him.
