Sheffield United picked up a much-needed and well deserved victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League yesterday. John Egan’s great performance has seemed to go under the radar, and we have taken a closer look at his display against Spurs in the latest edition of our Unsung Hero feature.
But Spurs have a plethora of attacking talent and had Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min all starting for the fixture at Bramall Lane so the Blades defence had to be at their best.
John Egan did exactly that as he sat in the middle of a back five and picked up the third best rating on the whole pitch, per SofaScore, 7.3. The Englishman hadn’t had the best performances since the return of football, and this was highlighted by his red card in the match against Newcastle, in which the Blades were tied at 0-0 until his sending off and then lost 3-0.
However he clearly is returning back to his best as he made six clearances and blocked one shot, whilst making three interceptions and tackles, per SofaScore. This highlights how tough he was to get past and he frustrated the Spurs attack, which is further highlighted by the fact that he won six out of his seven ground duels and two out of his four aerial duels.
Even though he didn’t keep a clean sheet, Chris Wilder should be very happy with his stunning performance in the middle of the defence, a position especially considering he remains without the injured Jack O’Connell alongside him. It was their first victory in the Premier League without O’Connell in the side and Wilder will now be less worried about how long the Englishman is out for.
His performance may have not been highlighted by the media, but £8.55m-valued Egan has proven that he is a key cog in what is a well-drilled and successful Sheffield United side.
