If the Blades hadn’t used a clause in his contract which keeps him at Bramall Lane for another year, then he would have become a free agent this summer, and he has now been linked with a move away from the Premier League.
According to The Athletic, the 26-year-old still has a contract offer on the table from the Blades, and no bids have yet been made for the player.
However, Scottish Premiership side Glasgow Rangers are the latest to show an interest in Lundstram and that now means at least five clubs are interested, with Sky Sports reporting that four Premier League sides are also keen on him.
Last season, Lundstram became a vital player both in attack and defence for the Blades as he averaged 1.4 tackles, one interception and 1.3 shots per game, via WhoScored. He also scored five goals, which was the joint-second most in the squad, and provided three assists, also the joint-second best at Sheffield United, which highlights how he thrived in the Premier League.
Throughout last season he earned a lot of praise from his manager, and it is easy to see why, so it would be gutting for the club if he were to depart
However, if there are Premier League sides interested, a move to Scotland looks unlikely unless he is offered a lot of money as the player, who came from Everton’s academy, will probably want to stay in the English top flight now that he knows he is capable of operating at that level.
The only problem is whether Lundstram tries to run down his contract, and therefore the £7.20m-valued player could leave on a free if he waits until next year.
Sheffield United spent only £540,000 on him, so it won’t be the biggest loss if he walks away on a free, but with recent events causing financial implications for football, the club will want to make money wherever possible and so they have a big decision to make on his future as they decide whether to try and seal a move for him this summer or let his contract run out if he does not sign a new deal.
