Marcus Dewhurst - his career so far

Marcus Dewhurst’s story is truly an intriguing one but more importantly, it’s one that’s still only at the very beginning as the young 19-year-old goalie is working hard to finally make it on the big stage. And even though he has been away from the club of his youth for a while now, Dewhurst is still one of Sheffield United’s very own.

The youngster started his career with the Blades, impressing the right people during his climb through the academy and into the development squads but with his position always well-covered within the team, it was decided that he needed further polishing at a senior level of another club before trying to force his way into the first team at Sheffield.

But interestingly enough, he started his career as a centre-forward and was then slowly but surely transitioned to the opposite end of the pitch to become a goalkeeper – and a really talented one at that.

Dewhurst’s early days after progressing through the academy were all spent on loan deals as he was first sent out to Gainsborough Trinity on a short-term loan in November 2018, making his debut just a few days later against Tamworth. Upon his return, though, another loan spell awaited.

This time, the young goalie would be sent to Guiseley in December 2018, making his debut the following week against Altrincham. There, he would tally 21 appearances, keeping six clean sheets and helping his team advance up the table with success.

After his return back home to Sheffield United, and before yet another loan stint, he would go on a pre-season tour with the Blades, gaining some valuable experience before joining his current club, Carlisle United, in January 2020.

The now 19-year-old talent was supposed to stay at his new club until the end of the season but it still remains to be seen how both clubs approach this situation as football hopefully resumes sooner rather than later.

Despite his potential, Dewhurst is still waiting for his senior debut at Sheffield United.

Transfer latest

The biggest piece of transfer news on Dewhurst was definitely the club’s decision to send him out on loan on deadline day in the January transfer window. Seeing how he’s been spending a lot of time away from the club, it is still pretty unclear what the future holds for the 19-year-old goalie.

Still, no Sheffield United news nor any transfer rumours are currently suggesting the Blades would want to part with him permanently and he is still seen as a big prospect that could make it on the big stage once he develops properly.

His latest stint before joining Carlisle United was a success and Dewhurst was a steady presence between the sticks for his temporary team and was gaining some valuable first-team action and experience under his belt.

Player profile

Dewhurst’s player profile is peculiar in every sense of the word. There are not many centre-forwards turned goalkeepers around in the world of football but that transition seems to have been the perfect choice for the 19-year-old talent.

He is slowly but surely becoming a very safe goalie who can play well with his feet, courtesy of his days as an outfield player, and has good reflexes and positioning. Dewhurst is also really fast and can be effective when rushing out of his area and confronting the attacker 1v1.

These are the situations in which he excels and shows his natural fitness, composure and determination. But it’s also his delivery of the ball into the feet of his teammates with pinpoint accuracy that should not be disregarded.

He has the makings of a brilliant sweeper-keeper.
