Sheffield United: Chris Basham linked with two Premier League sides - Premier League

A strong defence has been a huge reason as to why Chris Wilder has had such a great season in charge at Sheffield United in the Premier League this season.

However, recent news suggests that some fellow top-flight clubs are trying to break up the defensive unit at the Blades by possibly signing one of their centre-backs.

According to the Daily Mail, Chris Basham is a transfer target for both Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United and Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

He has one year left on his contract and this has alerted the aforementioned two clubs, who want to strengthen their defence with a proven Premier League defender.

The 31 year-old has averaged 2.2 tackles, two interceptions and 4.4 clearances a game in his 36 Premier League appearances this season, per WhoScored, and he has played in every top flight fixture for Wilder’s Blades so far, picking up 13 clean sheets along the way.

His defensive statistics highlight how crucial he has been to thwarting Sheffield United’s opponents and this has helped the Blades easily steer clear of relegation and instead mount a charge for Europe as they currently sit eighth.

For these reasons, Wilder should not sell Basham, especially to fellow Premier League sides, and it wouldn’t necessarily be a step up for the player as Newcastle and Burnley are both beneath the Blades in the table.

Hopefully he will stay at Bramall Lane but, with Sheffield United performing so well this season, it is not surprising to see their players being linked with moves elsewhere.
