Sheffield United will attempt to improve their squad this summer and the latest reports suggest that they are looking towards the Championship for their next acquisition.
According to The Telegraph, the Blades have made the first move in the race for Nottingham Forest player Matty Cash as they offered £10 million for the right-back.
This bid was rejected by the Championship side and it will be interesting to see what happens next as fellow Premier League sides West Ham United and Southampton are also keen on signing Cash, who was a transfer target of Italian giants AC Milan earlier this season.
The 22 year-old has had a good season at Forest at both ends of the pitch as he has made 42 appearances in the division and scored three goals whilst picking up five assists. He has also made 1.1 key passes a game, via WhoScored. Meanwhile defensively, he averaged 2.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and three clearances per game.
The player started off as a right midfielder, but this season he has been moved to right-back and clearly it has worked wonders as he has still been able to be good defensively whilst also being a threat up front, and this type of full-back is the ideal type of signing in a Chris Wilder side.
Wilder plays with five defenders, but the left back and right back are crucial to the Blades’ attacking play and have to be bombing up and down the flanks, Cash suits that style given his background as a midfielder before moving further back.
The signing would definitely be a good one if they get him for a good price, however it is definitely worth wondering if he would come straight into the side as a replacement for George Baldock, or if he is seen more as cover. Kieron Freeman, who was seen as a back up to Baldock, has left the club, so it seems like Cash would be replacing Freeman and this would definitely be an upgrade.
There are a lot of games in a season, including cup competitions and to have a strong squad is crucial so if needed, you can rely on your squad players to come into the starting eleven and perform well, and bringing in Cash would give the Blades two very strong right sided defenders.
