Sheffield United have striker Lys Mousset out with an injury with an unknown return date, and Chris Wilder has recently said that they need another forward. This has seen them be linked with a Premier League player.
According to The Daily Mail, the Blades are looking into many targets upfront, and this has seen them express an interest in Newcastle United attacker Dwight Gayle.
This interest has seen them ask the Magpies about the availability of the player, and right now it is unknown whether they would make a bid for the player or look to acquire him on loan.
Throughout his career, Gayle has scored 102 goals in 258 appearances, per Transfermarkt – a very respectable tally. He has played in the Premier League not just for Newcastle, but also for Crystal Palace, and at these two clubs, he has scored 58 goals in 167 appearances.
His best scoring season in England’s top flight came back in 2013/14, when he scored seven goals in the division, but he only scored four goals last campaign, so that will worry supporters slightly. However he would bring some good squad depth and there is no doubt Wilder can get the best out of him as he has done with his current squad which finished ninth in the Premier League last season.
The main worry for supporters of the club would be that this recent news might suggest that the Blades are not confident about singing former U17 World Cup winner and exciting prospect Rhian Brewster from Liverpool.
There has been a lot of news around this possible transfer, with the Blades reportedly making a bid for the player and it looked like he would be coming to Bramall Lane. However with Gayle being linked and journalist Paul Joyce reporting that the Crystal Palace have now made an approach for Brewster, it suggests that Wilder may feel like Gayle might be the more likely option to bring to the club.
