# Sheffield Wednesday: George Byers and Mark McGuinness may return vs Cheltenham

**[Sheffield Wednesday](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sheffield-wednesday-news/) duo George Byers and Mark McGuinness may return from injury against Cheltenham on Saturday.**

### The Lowdown: Injury absence

Central midfielder Byers was starting to establish himself in Darren Moore’s side, scoring [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/george-byers/leistungsdaten/spieler/240083) goals in five [League One](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/league-one-news/) starts. However, the 26-year-old has been missing for the last [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/george-byers/leistungsdaten/spieler/240083) league fixtures with a [foot problem](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/sheffield-wednesday-injury-update-darren-25191290).

Meanwhile, defender McGuinness, who arrived on loan in the summer, has been absent in the previous [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mark-mcguinness/leistungsdaten/spieler/561454) third-tier fixtures with a muscle [strain](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/sheffield-wednesday-injury-update-darren-25191290).

### The Latest: Back vs Cheltenham?

[Yorkshire Live reporter Oliver Jones](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/sheffield-wednesday-injury-update-darren-25191290) relayed an injury update from Moore ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Cheltenham.

He said that Byers and McGuinness ‘both might return against the Robins’, in what would be a timely boost following the midweek defeat to Plymouth.

### The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Both Byers and McGuinness were starting to consolidate their place in Moore’s first-choice XI prior to their respective injuries and are rated in Wednesday’s top four 2022/23 performers, as per [SofaScore](https://www.sofascore.com/team/football/sheffield-wednesday/12).

Therefore, it would be welcome news if they were to return at Hillsborough tomorrow. McGuinness’ return could be especially timely with concern to defender [Reece James](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sheffield-wednesday-news/sheffield-wednesday-reece-james-injury-concern/) in the week, while forward [Mallik Wilks](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sheffield-wednesday-news/sheffield-wednesday-reece-james-injury-concern/) also missed the defeat to Plymouth Argyle with a hamstring problem.

Should James miss out, then McGuinness may slot straight back into the side, meaning Moore could have some late calls to make.
