Sheffield Wednesday teenager Pierce Charles is close to signing a professional deal with the Owls, according to Dom Howson for Yorkshire Live.

The Lowdown: Strong start to the season

Darren Moore’s side chalked up another League One victory on Saturday, with Will Vaulks’ goal proving the difference at Port Vale. The victory took the Owls into third place, with eight of the top nine in the division all winning at the weekend.

The good news for Wednesday looks like it will keep on coming, with an update emerging prior to Saturday’s win on an exciting young player at Hillsborough.

The Latest: Charles set for pro contract

Howson took to Twitter on Friday afternoon to share an update from Sheffield Wednesday on Charles, on which he also reported for Yorkshire Live.

He said that the young goalkeeper, who is ‘regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the club's academy’, is ‘close to signing his first pro contract’ after ‘Moore confirmed talks’ in his press conference.

The Verdict: Good news

There seems to be a real feel-good factor around Hillsborough at this moment in time, so the news of Charles’ impending first professional deal should only add to that.

The 17-year-old has spent time training with the Owls' first-team squad this season and with the Northern Ireland senior squad, so he appears to be a young star in the making.

Wednesday officials have been in talks for weeks to get this deal over the line, and it looks as if their hard work will pay off.

Who knows, Charles could be a first-team regular at Hillsborough in years to come...
