YorkshireLive journalist Dom Howson has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday could be lining up three more signings before transfer deadline day.

The Lowdown: Six-goal thriller

The Owls were held to a 3-3 draw in what was an emphatic first game of the League One season against Portsmouth last weekend.

Darren Moore has never been one to shy away from the fact that he needs to see a major improvement from his defenders, and it sounds like the boss could be eyeing another reinforcement for his backline, alongside prioritising the final third of the pitch.

The Latest: Howson’s transfer claim

Asked during a fan Q&A whether there are any fresh Sheffield Wednesday transfer updates, Howson insisted that he believes the Owls could target three new additions ahead of September 1. He said:

“It has gone a little quiet but I am sure things will pick up again very soon. I expect there to be a few ins and outs.

“I really don't think Wednesday need to make that many more signings. Maybe one more centre-back and two attacking players. If they get them in, I think they are well covered in every position.”

The Verdict: Defensive priorities

Moore has already signed Akin Famewo, Michael Ihiekwe and Ben Heneghan this summer, but he must feel like he needs to prioritise this area and bolster his defensive ranks even further.

One name that the Owls have been consistently linked with is Birmingham City’s Harlee Dean, having spent the second half of last season out on loan at Hillsborough, but he was very injury prone and has even missed some of the Blues’ pre-season games due to being ruled out, so that’s probably not a risk worth taking.

Who the Wednesday boss will target in the coming weeks yet remains to be seen, but he needs to act fast if he wants to build a squad capable of seriously challenging for promotion to make that jump back up to the Championship.
