Sheffield Wednesday correspondent Dom Howson believes that the club will want to get a new deal over the line for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru ‘as soon as possible’.

The Lowdown: Current contract

Dele-Bashiru arrived at Hillsborough back in 2020 from Manchester City and has gone on to make 56 appearances for the Owls.

The 21-year-old started the current campaign in fine form by netting two goals against Portsmouth, which resulted in recent interest from Championship sides Blackpool and Bristol City.

The central midfielder’s current deal is set to expire next year, but it looks as if he could be the next to pen fresh terms with the club.

The Latest: Howson’s comments

Howson ran a Q&A for Yorkshire Live on Wednesday and was asked by one supporter about any further updates on contracts after Pierce Charles signed a professional deal last week.

The reporter said that ‘Wednesday are in advanced talks with Dele-Bashiru’ and believes that the ‘focus is on getting that one done as soon as possible’.

“Moore mentioned last week that Wednesday are in advanced talks with Dele-Bashiru over a new contract. I think the focus is on getting that one done as soon as possible. Lee Gregory made it clear after Cambridge he would to sign a new deal.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Wednesday have an extremely talented player on their hands in Dele-Bashiru, with Barry Bannan hailing the midfielder as ‘brilliant’.

Therefore, it would be welcome news if the player was to become the latest player to extend his Hillsborough stay heading into the New Year.

You’d expect that a new deal would cool rumours of a possible exit and allow the midfielder to focus on forcing his way back into Darren Moore’s first-choice XI, which can only be positive.
