Sheffield Wednesday: Fans rave about Barry Bannan despite missing out on Player of the Year

Loads of Sheffield Wednesday fans have been raving about midfielder Barry Bannan, after journalist Joe Crann tweeted about the Scot to praise him despite the fact he didn’t win the club’s Player of the Year award.
Dominic Iorfa was the man who was given the prize by the Owls fans after featuring 41 times in the Championship, helping the team to 10 clean sheets whilst also chipping in with two goals and two assists (Transfermarkt).
However, in an article for the Sheffield Star, Crann highlighted how vital Bannan was in the 2019/20 campaign despite sometimes coming in for criticism from a section on the Wednesday fan base.
Indeed, according to the article the ex-Aston Villa man provided the most assists for the South Yorkshire side (8), whilst also topping the charts when it came to key passes (98), passes (2273), accurate passes (1801) and accurate crosses (72). Added to that he was also in the top four for tackles won (63), successful dribbles (41) and interceptions (47).
Having read the piece from Crann, lots of Sheffield Wednesday fans have been reacting on Twitter with plenty opting to sing the praises of the £2.16m-valued man. One described him as being “one of the best” players to play for the Owls in the last 20 years, whilst another claimed he is the “heartbeat” of the team.
Here is what some had to say…
Head and shoulders our best player, But instead the fans give it Iorfa 🙈😂

They always are Joe. He’s so consistent season in season out. I really hope we scrap the 5 at the back next season as I’d love to see a midfield 3 of Bannan, Luongo and FDB

One of the best players to put on the shirt for 20 years.

How Bannan gets anything other than plaudits amazes me. The most consistent performer at the club in years. He’s been statistically the best player since he joined. Rarely injured, never dropped, always competitive. Imagine if he was surrounded by players who were as good as him? https://t.co/50a1VchNpk

Never hides either. Even if he’s not having his best game. Takes a lot of responsibility on himself.

Absolutely – I live in Leicester & majority of my mates are LCFC fans, whenever they ask how we’re doing & what our squads looking like, I always tell them he’s the heartbeat of the team, & when he’s on the ball & controlling the tempo of the game, we’re a much better side! #swfc

Bang on. Plus dont forget every opposition manager targets him as our key man, so tactically opposition set up to stop him.
I think he is our best player.— Chris Walker (@Chriswa69512320) July 31, 2020
