Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to Carabao Cup first round draw

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to Carabao Cup first round draw - Sheffield Wednesday News

The last game of the 2019/20 Championship season for Sheffield Wednesday was just under a month ago, but preparations for the next campaign have already got underway as the Owls have found out who they will face in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Owls, who have won this competition in 1991, will be facing an away trip to League Two side Walsall, so the Championship side will be favourites and hoping they can advance to the next round. The fixture was tweeted out immediately by Dom Howson and the club, which saw a lot of fans reacting to the news.

The League Cup is set up so that for the first few rounds, the sides in the North of England face each other and the sides in the South do exactly the same, so it adds a bit more of a competitive value to the fixture as they are facing teams in their area.

Premier League sides are not in the competition yet, so the Owls have a good chance of advancing to the next round. Despite the fact that a club from England’s top flight has not won the competition since Sheffield Wednesday in 1991 as they beat Manchester United, supporters of the Owls will be hoping that they can do the unimaginable again and go on a great cup run this season.

That said, it seems that Wednesday fans were rather uninspired by the draw, perhaps because it is a club from two divisions lower than themselves and also one who they do not share a rivalry with given they are based in the West Midlands and not South Yorkshire – a game against Doncaster Rovers for example may have got the juices flowing a little more.

Here is how some reacted…
