Lots of Sheffield Wednesday fans have been reacting to a post from Yorkshire Live journalist Dom Howson, which questioned whether Joost van Aken could reignite his career at Hillsborough.
The Dutchman joined the Owls way back in 2017 from SC Heerenveen, costing the club a hefty £4 million fee at the time.
However, in truth he has failed to live up to that price tag so far. He played just 14 times in the Championship in his debut season for the club, with the side keeping just three clean sheets in those matches. He also memorably struggled against bitter rivals Sheffield United as they lost 4-2 to the Blades, with Mark Duffy dummying him twice before finding the back of the net.
The following season he featured just twice in all competitions before being shipped out on loan to 2.Bundesliga side VfL Osnabruk for the 2019/20 campaign.
That loan spell is now over and he will return to Hillsborough where his future will be assessed. Howson posted on Twitter, asking fans whether it was worth giving the 26-year-old another chance in the team.
However, it seems that lots of them do not believe he should return to the Sheffield Wednesday team – they probably still remember how he struggled when he first arrived at the club.
Many are calling for the South Yorkshire outfit to move him on, with one suggesting he “can’t defend” and is “physically frail.” Indeed, in his 14 games for the Owls in 17/18 he averaged just 1.2 tackles per game, by comparison Dominic Iorfa, who has played centre-back for Wednesday this season, averaged 2.2.
Here is what some had to say…
I will never forget that Derby match at Hillsborough especially the 3rd Goal

No. Its vital he leaves. The level of change required to change the culture is being vastly underestimated. Why the hell is van Aken gonna come back and be 8/9 times the player he was (thats the improvement required for him to be a squad player) after a year at Osnabruck? 😩🤦🏻♂️

Not a chance, can’t defend & physically frail, a bad combination

Osnabruck’s results improved when he was out injured. Time for him to move on.

It’d be some turnaround if he did. Looked like a League Two player. £5m 🤦🏻♂️

Too lightweight for English football
