Sheffield Wednesday could end up signing 'two or three' players during the January transfer window, reliable journalist Joe Crann has claimed.

The Lowdown: Owls still flying high

The Owls are having a positive season currently, sitting third in the League One table, conceding the second-fewest goals and also boasting the joint-highest goal difference.

At the moment, everything points towards Darren Moore's side being right in the automatic promotion picture at the end of the season, as they look to seal a return to the Championship.

With the January window now open, new faces could come in to bolster Wednesday's squad even further.

The Latest: New signings predicted

That's certainly the opinion of Crann, who took to Twitter to say that he believes reinforcements will arrive before the month comes to an end:

"Right then, January 1st, transfer window open, but Darren Moore says he’s hoping it isn’t a busy one. Gut feel is he’ll get two or three in and want to keep the rest of his squad together. Loans for some of the younger lads. Let the speculation begin."

The Verdict: Defensive reinforcements needed

This is an encouraging update, with signings needed in the Owls' defence after the injuries suffered by Ben Heneghan and Michael Ihiekwe.

Failure to strengthen in that area would be a big error by Wednesday and it could end up having an adverse effect on their promotion battle, given they have built so much of this success on strength through the spine of the team.

It is imperative that Moore is given the funds to add to his squad as each transfer window arrives, bringing a freshness to the group, as well as adding more quality and depth over time.
