It’s a very special day for one player at Sheffield Wednesday and a lot of fans are reacting to the news that it has now been a decade since Liam Palmer made his debut for the Owls.
One fan has called the momentous occasion a “special day” as, 10 years ago today, the right-back made his Wednesday debut in a 1-0 victory against Bury in the League Cup. Since then, he has made 259 appearances for the club, scoring once and setting up nine goals along the way, per Transfermarkt.
He truly is Wednesday born and raised, as he was scouted to sign for the academy around 21 years ago, and the player himself has spoken about his time at the club and reaching this great milestone as he posted on Instagram, via Yorkshire Live, “Just a kid from Worksop who never left the house without a ball at my feet, with dreams of maybe one day becoming a professional footballer.
“Fast forward 21 years after SWFC academy came calling, never did I think I would still be walking through the gates at Middlewood Road.”
The club have tweeted to congratulate the player on his great career so far, saying, “Came up through the academy ranks and now it’s years since Liam Palmer’s debut! Blue and white through and through and a fantastic #swfc role model too. Nice one, Liam”.
He is still only 28 and so could be at the club for many more years – and he could be needed more than ever as the Owls battle to stay in the Championship next season due to the 12-point deduction that they have received before a ball has been kicked.
Here is what these Wednedsday fans said following the club’s tweet:
🙌 Came up through the academy ranks and now it's 🔟 years since Liam Palmer's debut!
Blue and white through and through and a fantastic #swfc role model too.
