# Sunderland: James Hunter shares Aiden McGeady injury news

**James Hunter has now shared some big Sunderland injury news involving Aiden McGeady.**

### The Lowdown: Injury doubts

There have been some major [doubts](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/gillingham-team-news-aiden-mcgeady-injury-news/) shared over whether McGeady will be able to play at the Stadium of Light again this season, given that he has been ruled out since [November](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aiden-mcgeady/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/21333/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) with a serious knee injury.

However, an update has now been provided on the Irishman ahead of their game at home to Shrewsbury Town in League One on Friday afternoon.

### The Latest: Could still play

Taking to Twitter before Friday’s action, The Chronicle journalist [Hunter](https://twitter.com/JHunterChron/status/1514535747558285312) has now shared an update on McGeady’s fitness, claiming that he ‘might yet play’ for the Wearside club before the campaign finishes:

*“Aiden McGeady set to step up his recovery next week – and might yet play some part for Safc this season.”*

### The Verdict: Big boost

Given that there were originally doubts over his involvement in any capacity this term, the fact that McGeady could still play a part in the run-in is no doubt a big boost.

The winger currently ranks as their fourth-best performer in League One, having scored three goals and made a further four assists, while he also ranks highly among his teammates in terms of average shots, key passes, crosses and through balls per match in the division ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/16/Show/England-Sunderland)).

Alex Neil’s team could really do with the 36-year-old’s experience on top of his quality, as they look to chase promotion up to the Championship.
