Liverpool have been considered a front-runner in the race to sign Jude Bellingham and now a new update from a reliable source has emerged.

What's the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to reveal more details about the highly-anticipated transfer battle to sign the Borussia Dortmund and England midfielder, confirming that Liverpool have made contact.

Romano tweeted:

"Nothing has changed for Bellingham deal. Liverpool consider him the main target, contact already started — but Real Madrid, Manchester City and also Chelsea remain in the race. Nothing will be decided now."

"Borussia Dortmund will only negotiate on price in 2023."

It'd be a major coup

The fact that Liverpool have made contact proves their ambitious intent to secure the signing of Bellingham and it is without question that it would be a major coup for the Reds in their pursuit to rebuild the heart of their team.

It is no secret that the squad built in during the almost seven-year tenure of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield is starting to reach their limit with many of the players well into their 30s at this point.

James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson are just some of the key players in the latter stages of their respective careers at this point and the need for a youth revolution has never been more obvious at the club.

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League following a poor run of inconsistent form ahead of the World Cup break which can be blamed on not only the injury concerns in the team but also the lack of energy with the Merseysiders being out-run by every league opponent in their first six games.

As a result, the signing of Bellingham could not come at a better time for Liverpool with the current concerns in the centre of the pitch and the 19-year-old wonderkid could transform the team.

Bellingham - who was hailed "class" and an "enforcer" by journalist Josh Bunting - ranks in the top 5% of his positional peers across Europe for dribbles completed and touches, ranking in the top 11% for non-penalty goals, shots on goal and progressive passes received.

Indeed, it won't be a cheap move for FSG to sanction as the talented teenage sensation has had a £129m price tag slapped on him by Dortmund but with the player almost guaranteeing at least a decade of services over his career ahead, it would be a seemingly worthwhile investment if he can retain the levels he has already displayed.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see how the battle for Bellingham's signature plays out either in January or in the summer transfer window, especially after his World Cup campaign with England.
