# Southampton: Club open to the idea of selling Elyounoussi

**Southampton’s hopes of offloading bit-part winger Mohamed Elyounoussi have been boosted, amid reports that Serie A club’s Genoa and Atalanta are interested in buying him, according to [TuttoMercatoWeb](https://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/serie-a/tmw-genoa-e-atalanta-chieste-informazioni-sul-norvegese-elyounoussi-1280548).**

The Norway international has failed to make an impact at St Mary’s [since arriving from Basel for £19m last summer](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/3550768/southampton-sign-midfielder-mohamed-elyounoussi-to-five-year-deal). Indeed, he failed to score or assist in the Premier League last season and didn’t finish in the top five in a [single attacking metric](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18/Archive/England-Southampton) per game last season, with his performance against Manchester City in December slated by fans online, via [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2018/12/31/southampton-fans-react-to-mohamed-elyounoussi-display/).

The 25-year-old is yet to find the net in a Southampton shirt and has fallen behind Nathan Redmond, Soufiane Boufal and new signing Moussa Djenepo in the pecking order at Saints, with manager [Ralph Hasenhuttl keen to strike a deal for the wide man](https://www.tv2.no/sport/10762458/).

[Reports in Turkey (Fanatik)](https://www.fanatik.com.tr/mohamed-elyounoussi-besiktas-atesini-yakti-2081985) suggested that Elyounoussi would be heading to Super Lig titans Besiktas before the European transfer window closes on 2nd September, with Saints open to a potential loan move for their midfielder.

However, it has now emerged that the Norwegian could be moving to Italy on a permanent basis. Both of the aforementioned clubs are thought to be interested in the former Basel man, with Southampton looking to recoup €14m for his services.

Considering the fact Boufal – who [averaged](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/234363/History/Sofiane-Boufal) more key passes, dribbles and shot per game than the Norwegian while on loan at Celta Vigo last season – is back in the squad does only increase the competition for places for a man who made just [16 appearances](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18/Archive/England-Southampton) in the league last year.

Redmond, of course, was the club’s second-top scorer last season and the big-money signing of Djenepo would suggest he’s a man wanted by the Saints boss, so it’s hard to see Elyounoussi getting much in the way of first-team football.
