After considering Frank Lampard for the hot seat, Southampton have already made a decision on the Premier League legend.

The Lowdown: Saints searching...

The south coast side are still without a permanent manager after sacking Nathan Jones earlier this week.

Talks broke down over the prospective appointment of former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch after a difference in contract length with Southampton now back to the drawing board.

Battling relegation, the club are apparently set to make a decision after Chelsea this weekend - namely whether to continue their managerial search or turn to assistant coach Ruben Selles.

The Latest: Southampton 'considered' Lampard...

According to The Athletic, Lampard has been 'considered' for the Southampton managerial role by club chiefs.

However, after performing extensive background checks and compiling initial reports, the St. Mary's Stadium side opted against pursuing talks.

The Verdict: Right call?

The 44-year-old would've come as a mixed bag appointment for Southampton supporters.

Guiding Derby County to a Championship play-off final in 2019, Lampard's achievements don't really extend beyond that despite his status as a big name in the English football world.

You could make the case he helped to rescue Everton from dropping to the Championship last season, but after a nightmare start to this campaign, Toffees officials showed him the door.

His stint at Chelsea didn't bare fruit, either, making it understandable why Southampton opted against this move.
