Alexandre Jankewitz – his career so far
Alexandre Jankewitz has been with Southampton for a couple of seasons now and the now 18-year-od gem is slowly but surely getting used to his surroundings over in England. Prior to his transfer to the St. Mary’s Stadium back in 2018, the Swiss international has only played back in his home country.
His first footballing steps were made for Servette FC in the Swiss U18 Elite League, playing for their development squads and immediately catching the eye of many suitors across Europe and primarily from the Premier League.
Jankewitz was then scouted and bought from the Geneva-based club, joining the Saints as a first-year scholar and slotting right into their U18 squad. Of course, the basic idea was to let him start slow and then move up in the world to eventually be a senior team member once he is deemed ready by the upper hierarchy.
It has been two campaigns since his introduction as the newest signing and his stay with the development squads has been quite good but not at the preferred level as of yet. The 18-year-old midfielder has tallied a total of 12 appearances, notching one assist during that time as well and was then moved up to the U23s.
For the older squad, the Swiss gem could muster 17 games to date, also contributing to their campaign with a solitary assist under his belt. We are still waiting for him to make that step up and show the talent that was clear throughout his progress in the academy.
Jankewitz has also been capped at various levels with his national team and is currently playing for Switzerland’s U19s, already registering a total of six appearances and slowly but surely building his portfolio.
Before the start of the 2019/20 campaign, the Swiss international had signed his first professional contract with Southampton, tying him to the club until at least 2022. Of course, his eyes are still set on first-team action and it will be interesting to keep track of his further development.
Before he signed with Southampton, there have been transfer rumours of other teams trying to acquire his services and Tottenham Hotspur, in particular, were quite interested to scoop up him before the Saints beat them to the punch.
At the moment, the Southampton news mill on Jankewitz has been quite dry and the last we’ve heard from him was back in 2019 when he penned a new contract with the club, prolonging his stay until 2022.
And interestingly enough, he was also included in Guardian’s Top 20 talents in Premier League clubs for 2018 and if he keeps pushing on and impressing, we just might hear from him again sooner rather than later.
Jankewitz is a highly versatile midfielder who can cover multiple different positions in the midfield line. Even though he is primarily a central midfielder, he can also operate higher as well as deeper on the pitch, slotting in the number 10 and the pivot role.
This makes him a really good box-to-box player who can attack and defend admirably. Some of his best traits include speed, acceleration and good passing abilities that he uses to progress the ball up the pitch from deeper areas.
He is also strong when making tackles and is decent at positioning himself well in both defensive and offensive phases of play.
