Steve Howey has advised Sean Longstaff to reignite his career by choosing to join Southampton instead of Everton.
The midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his £1,000-per-week deal at Newcastle United and looks likely to leave St James’ Park before the transfer window slams shut next week.
Longstaff’s precarious contract situation has led to Southampton and Everton raising an interest, with Newcastle willing to sanction a sale for £10million.
Who should Longstaff join before the deadline?
The 23-year-old has been made to settle for two substitute appearances since the Premier League season got underway, while he played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle crashed out of the League Cup at the hands of Burnley.
Reports suggest Everton have already held initial talks over a move and Toffees boss Rafa Benitez is keen to be reunited with Longstaff after working with the central midfielder during his time at the St James’ Park helm.
But former Magpies defender Howey thinks Longstaff would get more first-team opportunities by joining Southampton.
He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “I think he has got a better chance of getting in Southampton’s team than he has at Everton, without being disrespectful to Southampton. It’s something he could look at.”
