According to GOAL, Southampton star Ryan Bertrand is reportedly stalling on a new contract at the Premier League side, amidst interest from the division’s top six.
While it has been reported that there have been problems regarding Danny Ings’ new contract and the Englishman is looking to play for Champions League clubs, it seems as if there is now a worry over Bertrand’s future as well now.
Should Southampton allow Bertrand to leave for free?
Top six clubs want Bertrand
The report stated that Bertrand is stalling on signing a new Southampton contract unless the Saints offer him a bumper new deal. He, like Ings, is keen to play for a Champions League side and top six clubs are interested in signing the left-back.
The report states that Southampton are currently not willing to break the bank to hand out expensive new deals to Ings and Bertrand. The left-back’s contract at St. Mary’s runs out in the summer of 2021 and he is delaying the decision to sign an extension unless he’s offered big money for it.
While the report doesn’t mention specific clubs that want Bertrand, it says that because of his status as a homegrown player, experience and quality, top six sides are keeping an eye on him.
Southampton should keep Bertrand
As things stand, as many as 12 Southampton players have picked up better ratings than Bertrand this season. The left-back has been rated at only 6.61 and is yet to score or assist even once in the campaign (as per Whoscored).
However, Bertrand has been Southampton’s only first-team option for the left-back spot, as Sam McQueen remains injured and Jake Vokins is yet to play for the first-team this season. So, even though Bertrand hasn’t had a great campaign, Saints would be foolish to allow such an experienced and important player to run out the clock on his contract.
