# Southampton: Matty Cash could be a shrewd Cedric Soares replacement amid transfer interest

**According to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11727/11914954/matty-cash-ac-milan-southampton-interested-in-nottingham-forest-defender), Southampton are interested in signing Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash this month as they prepare for a Cedric Soares departure.**

The 28-year-old confirmed in an interview with [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/11/07/cedric-soares-interview-will-leave-southampton-season-focussed/) last November that he is leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, and Cash has the potential to be a good replacement.

With AC Milan also [said to be interested](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11727/11914954/matty-cash-ac-milan-southampton-interested-in-nottingham-forest-defender) in the Nottingham Forest man, Southampton could find it difficult to lure him to St. Mary’s. But if they are able to, then it could be a very smart piece of business, at least going off statistics.

On the attacking side of things, Cash could really add something to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side from the right-back position. This season under Sabri Lamouchi in the Championship, the 22-year-old has averaged [1.1](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/322043/Show/Matthew-Cash) key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game (via WhoScored).

That is more than what Cedric is currently averaging ([0.7](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69945/Show/C%C3%A9dric-Soares) key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game). The Euro 2016 winner is, of course, playing in a stronger division. But the signs are still promising, with Cash having time to adapt and grow at 22.

If the Saints are in the market for a Cedric successor this month, then Cash looks worth a punt. AC Milan’s interest, if serious, will not make things easy, though.

The potential impact it could have on the future of another young full-back in Yan Valery will also have to be considered. However, as things stand, by no means does this sound like a terrible idea.
