# Southampton: Ruben Selles tipped to take over as manager

**[Southampton](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/southampton-fc-news/) are on the hunt for a new manager, and reporter Jacob Tanswell believes that interim boss Ruben Selles is now likely to be offered the job.**

### The Lowdown: Selles placed in charge

The Saints [parted ways](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12780074/nathan-jones-southampton-sack-manager-after-just-14-games-and-three-months-in-charge) with Nathan Jones a week ago, after the former Luton Town boss averaged just [1.07](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-jones/stationen/trainer/15622) points per match in his 14 games in the dugout, and Selles was [placed](https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2023-02-12/southampton-football-club-nathan-jones-part-company-statement) in charge on an interim basis.

Given that Sport Republic came [very close](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/15/southampton-end-talks-with-jesse-marsch-over-length-of-contract) to hiring Jesse Marsch, while they also [considered](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/southampton-fc-news/premier-league-southampton-manager-news-latest-lampard/) Frank Lampard, it appears as though they were not planning on offering the job to their interim boss, but Tanswell now believes that it is the most likely scenario.

### The Latest: Tanswell’s update

Taking to Twitter in the wake of yesterday’s 1-0 victory away at Chelsea in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/), the journalist [said](https://twitter.com/J_Tanswell/status/1627008549862735872?s=20):

*“Selles spoke with conviction & a confidence that he belonged in the Premier League. Given Southampton want a quick solution, right now, I don’t see any way he doesn’t get the job.”*

### The Verdict: Right call?

It was a much-improved performance from the Saints yesterday, and while they failed to move off the bottom of the table, the outlook is looking much more promising, as they now sit just [three](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) points from safety.

Upon the full-time whistle, the players [pushed](https://twitter.com/J_Tanswell/status/1626991631135125504?s=20) the Spanish tactician to the front to celebrate in front of the fans, which reaffirms Tanswell’s [comments](https://twitter.com/J_Tanswell/status/1624708286984425473?s=20) about how ‘highly regarded’ he is by the squad.

Regardless of Selles’ lack of experience, having a group who have full respect for their manager can only be a good thing, and journalist Adam Blackmore [noted](https://twitter.com/AdamBlackmore/status/1626992105439600642?s=20) how ‘every player put their body on the line’ for the interim boss.

At the very least, the 39-year-old should remain in the job for the trip to Leeds United next week, and the display against Chelsea indicates that he could be in the dugout for a lot longer, if the performances remain at the same level.
