# Southampton: Stuart Armstrong considering leaving on loan

The Scotland international did not feature at all in the Saints’ opening defeat to Burnley last weekend, and was only introduced as a late substitute against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Because of this, the former Celtic midfielder could seemingly leave the club on loan, with the European transfer window not closing until 2 September.

[Having joined Southampton from Celtic for a reported £7m last summer](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44619120), the Scot made 29 appearances for Saints in his debut Premier League season, [finding the net three times and providing a further two assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/stuart-armstrong/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/130765/plus/0?saison=2018&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=).

Despite reported interest in Armstrong, it would be surprising to see him leave the club temporarily this summer. Although Saints have the likes of Nathan Redmond, James Ward-Prowse, Soufiane Boufal and now Moussa Djenepo available to them in the attacking midfield areas, they’ll need back-up should injuries occur throughout the campaign.

Southampton will also be competing in the FA Cup and EFL Cup as the season progresses, so there is always a chance his manager could opt to rotate his squad. After all, only three players averaged more [key passes per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18/Archive/England-Southampton?stageId=15151) (1) than him last season so it’s not as if the ex-Celtic man is performing well below the standards set by the rest of the squad.
