# Tottenham: Spurs could hold advantage in Jan Oblak talks

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/)‘s existing relationship with Atletico Madrid could give them an advantage in their negotiations to sign goalkeeper [Jan Oblak](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/jan-oblak/), according to reports from Spain.**

### The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing a new goalkeeper

Tottenham are looking to bring in a replacement for Hugo Lloris in the summer, with the Frenchman now 36 years old and putting in some very poor performances, making a [litany of errors](https://talksport.com/football/1309452/hugo-lloris-tottenham-manchester-city-arsenal-premier-league/) in defeats to Aston Villa, Arsenal and Manchester City last month.

Spurs have been linked with moves for the likes of [Jordan Pickford](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/premier-league-spurs-jordan-pickford-hugo-lloris-transfer-update-latest-rumours/) and [David Raya](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-david-raya-brentford-latest-transfer-news-rumours-updates/), while it also transpired that they were [considering](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/premier-league-spurs-hugo-lloris-jan-oblak-bid/) an ambitious offer for Oblak in November, and it appears as though he remains a subject of interest.

### The Latest: Oblak still an option

According to Spanish outlet [Marca](https://www.marca.com/futbol/atletico/2023/02/04/63dab0b5ca4741ba4f8b45ae.html) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/tottenham-ready-cash-transfer-favours-two-star-players-club-pushed-forward/)), Tottenham have built up a positive relationship with Atletico in recent times, having [loaned](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11161203/Sergio-Reguilon-seals-exit-Spurs-join-Atletico-Madrid-season-long-loan.html) Sergio Reguilon to the La Liga club and [released](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64478382#:~:text=Republic%20of%20Ireland%20defender%20Matt,contract%20to%20enable%20the%20transfer.) Matt Doherty to allow him to complete a move to the Spanish capital.

As such, Spurs are hoping that these favours could give them a boost in their bid to sign the Slovenian, while the report claims that winger Yannick Carrasco may also be targeted.

### The Verdict: Get it done

Previously hailed as a ‘[beast](https://twitter.com/ReshminTV/status/1237869643718471684?s=20&t=xHoVgxw-lQulJFoQvsEDeQ)‘ by BT Sport presenter Reshmin Chowdhury, the 30-year-old has [kept](https://www.transfermarkt.com/laliga/weisseweste/wettbewerb/ES1/saison_id/2022) the joint-fourth highest number of clean sheets in La Liga this season, with seven to his name already.

Atletico team-mate Koke [lauded](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/koke-oblak-rangnick-degea-manutd-26480131) the 6 foot 1 shot-stopper as ‘the best goalkeeper in the world’ less than a year ago, and Oblak has been a vital player for the Rojiblancos across a number of seasons, [playing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jan-oblak/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/121483) in every La Liga match in the previous three full campaigns.

\[freshpress-poll id=”423490″\]

Lloris put in an improved performance in the recent trip to Fulham, [keeping](https://www.sofascore.com/fulham-tottenham-hotspur/IsT) a clean sheet in Spurs’ 1-0 victory, but he is no match for Oblak, who has a better save percentage ([75%](https://fbref.com/en/players/ee8508c0/Jan-Oblak) to [71.4%](https://fbref.com/en/players/8f62b6ee/Hugo-Lloris)) and fewer goals against per 90 ([0.94](https://fbref.com/en/players/ee8508c0/Jan-Oblak) to [1.16](https://fbref.com/en/players/8f62b6ee/Hugo-Lloris)) than the Frenchman over the course of the past year.

Given that he is 30, the [54-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jan-oblak/profil/spieler/121483) Slovenia international could still have a number of years playing at the top level, and he would be an excellent addition for [Antonio Conte](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/antonio-conte/) this summer.
