# Tottenham: Spurs join Newcastle in Diego Carlos hunt

**Tottenham have joined Newcastle in the race to sign Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, according to [The Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10423773/Tottenham-join-Newcastle-hunt-sign-Sevilla-defender-Diego-Carlos.html).**

### The Lowdown: Newcastle move

Newcastle have been after the Brazilian for a number of weeks and appear to be closing in on the defender nicknamed [‘The Beast’](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/they-dont-call-him-beast-18054596?_ga=2.25358580.897593121.1586526588-71922878.1572343691).

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12520835/diego-carlos-newcastle-moving-closer-to-deal-for-sevilla-man-but-face-competition-from-london-premier-league-rival) revealed on Thursday evening that the Magpies are moving closer to a deal, with all parties ‘hopeful’ of finalising a move.

Carlos has submitted a transfer request and has already agreed [personal terms](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1484346604433731591) at St James’ Park, but it seems as if Tottenham are making an 11th-hour attempt to dramatically scupper a switch to the north east.

### The Latest: Spurs keen

[The Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10423773/Tottenham-join-Newcastle-hunt-sign-Sevilla-defender-Diego-Carlos.html) shared a story on Thursday, revealing that Spurs have joined Newcastle in the race to sign the 28-year-old.

The north Londoners have expressed their interest, with [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/17393067/tottenham-antonio-conte-transfer-diego-carlos-adama-traore/) adding that Tottenham will back Antonio Conte with a £50m raid for Carlos and Adama Traore.

### The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Carlos is valued at £40.5m by [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diego-carlos/marktwertverlauf/spieler/329145), so should he move to north London, he would be Spurs’ highest-valued [defender](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/kader/verein/148).

Conte could also do with a marquee defensive addition, as he has used left-back [Ben Davies](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-davies/leistungsdaten/spieler/192765) in a central role on a regular basis, and he could then offload Japhet Tanganga in the [coming days](https://sportwitness.co.uk/fabio-paratici-give-answer-tottenham-deal-weekend-club-working-signing/).

Carlos has plenty of [experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diego-carlos/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/329145) in La Liga and Ligue 1 and is the [16th](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diego-carlos/marktwertverlauf/spieler/329145)-highest valued centre-back in the world, so a move for less than his £40.5m valuation could be an excellent piece of business from Tottenham.
