# Tottenham: Lilywhites officials sent on Malo Gusto mission

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/), led by manager Antonio Conte, are now one of the clubs eyeing ‘exciting’ Lyon full-back Malo Gusto, according to reports.**

### The Lowdown: Spurs right-back debate…

Spurs have mostly turned to Brazil international and former Real Betis star Emerson Royal at right-wing-back this campaign but[debate has surrounded](https://thisisfutbol.com/2022/10/blogs/premier-league/thfc-crook-says-spurs-wont-win-title-with-emerson-criticise/) his suitability for the role.

Matt Doherty, coming amid Emerson’s suspension after his north London derby sending off, returned to the side against Brighton and Hove Albion as the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) top-four challengers ran out 1-0 winners down south.

The Republic of Ireland international was [praised](https://tbrfootball.com/brilliant-sky-pundit-lauds-matt-doherty-during-tottenham-win/) for his taking his rare opportunity but reports suggest the Brazilian [will return](https://twitter.com/LastWordOnSpurs/status/1579759212917583873) to Conte’s starting eleven.

Summer signing Djed Spence, despite his [impressive 2021/2022 season](https://www.nottinghamforest.news/2022/06/15/djed-spence-receives-praise-from-nottingham-forest-and-liverpool-stars/) on loan at Nottingham Forest, has also barely featured, as the right-wing-back role remains a point of contention at Spurs.

### The Latest: Tottenham eye Gusto…

Now, as per a fresh report, it appears Tottenham have one eye on a very bright full-back option from Europe.

Indeed, [90min](https://www.90min.com/posts/premier-league-clubs-send-scouts-watch-lyon-right-back-malo-gusto) claim the Lilywhites are apparently one of a ‘host of clubs’ who are keeping ‘close tabs’ on Lyon defender Gusto – who is emerging as ‘one of the most in-demand’ starlets in Europe.

Conte’s side are joined by a contingent of major clubs in their interest with Spurs officials also sent to run the rule over Ligue 1’s teenage talent in recent weeks.

### The Verdict: Exciting?

Described as ‘one of the most exciting RBs in the game’ by football scout writer [Zach Lowy,](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1566142087581601793) the 19-year-old has already earned [rave reviews](https://www.ligue1.com/Articles/ONE-TO-WATCH/2021/09/21/one-to-watch-malo-gusto-lyon-s-young-lion-bosz-neymar) for his handling of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar.

Contracted [until 2024](https://www.90min.com/posts/premier-league-clubs-send-scouts-watch-lyon-right-back-malo-gusto), Gusto can leave Lyon for nothing at the end of next season, a situation which could force the French side to cash in on him either in January or next summer.

The fact he is [so in demand across Europe](https://www.90min.com/posts/premier-league-clubs-send-scouts-watch-lyon-right-back-malo-gusto) only backs his obvious ability and Spurs must surely consider moving in.
