# Tottenham: Pete O’Rourke thrilled by one ‘very likely’ Antonio Conte signing

**Journalist Pete O’Rourke has been left thrilled by a ‘very likely’ Antonio Conte signing at [Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/).**

### The Lowdown: Conte closing in…

The Lilywhites head coach has set his sights on a major summer overhaul, with as many as six signings on the agenda, according to national newspapers like [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/04/20/antonio-conte-targets-six-summer-signings-spurs-face-homegrown/).

Conte [allegedly wants](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/04/20/antonio-conte-targets-six-summer-signings-spurs-face-homegrown/) a right wing-back, central defender, two midfielders, a forward and reserve goalkeeper, with reason to believe that considerable progress has been made on the latter position already.

[Numerous reports](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sam-johnstone-west-brom-star-tells-friends-hes-keen-to-join-tottenham-sources/) have backed that Spurs are favourites to sign West Bromwich Albion ‘keeper and soon-to-be free agent Sam Johnstone in a Bosman deal.

Journalist Dan Kilpatrick of the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-sam-johnstone-manchester-united-b999102.html), a famously reliable source, has also weighed in, claiming that Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici is indeed in pole position and an ‘agreement’ is rated as ‘very likely’ ([Twitter](https://twitter.com/Dan_KP/status/1523981030209863680)).

### The Latest: O’Rourke thrilled…

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88007064-tottenham-conte-close-to-sealing-good-business-at-hotspur-way), O’Rourke has claimed that Johnstone would be a ‘good signing’ for Spurs and has been left thrilled by these promising developments.

He explained: *“It looks like a good piece of business from Tottenham, Sam Johnstone on a free transfer.* *He is an England international, has got good experience and has played in the Premier League before as well.*

*“I think he’s a good signing to provide cover and real serious competition for Hugo Lloris, probably for the first time in a long time at Tottenham. He will keep Lloris on his toes and if he is ever out of the team, they’ve got a more than capable deputy to come in.”*

### The Verdict: Reason to be excited…

Johnston is a [proven](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/110864) shot-stopper in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) and also has [caps for England](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/nationalmannschaft/spieler/110864/verein_id/3299) at international level and has been revered by ex-professionals in his position.

Paddy Kenny, formerly of QPR and Sheffield United goalkeeping stock, has branded the 29-year-old ‘unreal’ and a potentially ‘top signing’ for Spurs ([Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/tottenham-could-seal-johnstone-deal-this-week-after-key-reveal-pundit/)).

Johnstone’s likely arrival could also go some way in helping to balance Tottenham’s [troubling homegrown quota,](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/04/20/antonio-conte-targets-six-summer-signings-spurs-face-homegrown/) an issue which could deeply impact their transfer plans.

On a free transfer, this will indeed be a quite simply brilliant piece of business from Paratici if it comes to fruition.
