Sunderland: Scott Wilson reveals John Ruddy transfer news -Sunderland News

The Northern Echo journalist Scott Wilson has now revealed some transfer news on reported Sunderland target John Ruddy.

The Lowdown: Sunderland target

It has been widely reported that the 35-year-old has been a target for the Championship club this summer, given that they only have one goalkeeper in their senior squad at the moment in Anthony Patterson.

Ruddy is out of contract having left Wolves, so he can sign for any club as a free agent.

The Latest: Birmingham bound

Taking to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, Wilson has now revealed that, while Sunderland ‘have been seriously considering’ a move for the goalkeeper, he now looks to be heading to Championship rivals Birmingham City.

Sharing a link to his article for The Northern Echo, the reporter tweeted: “#SAFC have been seriously considering John Ruddy as a goalkeeper signing – but the former England international looks to be heading to Birmingham instead…”

The Verdict: Blow for Sunderland

Of course it is a blow for the Black Cats to miss out on one of their targets, especially to a Championship rival.

Backed to be an ‘absolutely cracking signing‘ by podcaster and Sunderland supporter Philip West, 35-year-old would have been the perfect candidate to help Patterson along with his vast experience, while also being able to deputise for the 22-year-old when needed.

Should Sunderland sign Ruddy?

The Englishman has amassed more than 450 senior appearances at club level throughout his career, including 163 in the Championship (Transfermarkt), so he would have been a shrewd signing on a free transfer had the Black Cats managed to beat Birmingham to his signature.
