Sunderland: Josh Bunting buzzing over Graeme Murty appointment - Championship News

Journalist and Sunderland supporter Josh Bunting is buzzing over the news that Sunderland have appointed Graeme Murty as their new U21s manager.

The Lowdown: Murty appointed

As confirmed by the official website of the Stadium of Light outfit, the Wearside club have appointed Murty as their new U21s boss, and the job will be part of his wider role as Head of Professional Development Phase.

He was reportedly in talks over taking the role on last week, and now it has been confirmed that he will take charge at the Academy of Light.

The Latest: Bunting buzzing

Taking to Twitter after the news was announced, Bunting was left buzzing, claiming that Murty is an ‘intriguing and exciting’ appointment, adding that it was ‘very important’ that the Black Cats got a new coach in:

“Graeme Murty is an intriguing and exciting appointment for Sunderland’s academy, experienced the highs and lows of the game. Very important appointment and finally got it over the line. It’s a very solid appointment for the 21’s a really good head on the training ground with them.”

The Verdict: Smart move

Hiring Murty as their news U21s coach is certainly a smart move by Tony Mowbray’s side.

Previously at Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, he was hailed for his ‘outstanding‘ service over five years there as their Head of Elite Academy Development.

Murty had played a leading role in the development of their Academy players and practices, leading their development squad to success in the SPFL Reserve League, in addition to managing their first steps into the UEFA Youth League in 2019.

As a player, he played over 80 games in the Championship, and so his CV suggests that he will be a solid appointment over the next few years.
