Sunderland: Black Cats plot Anthony Glennon move

Sunderland: Black Cats plot Anthony Glennon move - Championship News

Sunderland are reportedly plotting a move for Grimsby Town left-back Anthony Glennon in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Standout performer

The 22-year-old has been the Mariners’ standout performer so far this season, having scored one goal and supplied three assists from left-back in League Two, while no other player in the squad is averaging more key passes or crosses per game than him (WhoScored).

His current deal expires in 2024, so Grimsby could look to make a quick profit on him in January, having signed him in the summer following his departure from Burnley.

The Latest: Sunderland move plotted

As per Football Insider, Sunderland are one of three clubs who are plotting to sign Glennon in January, along with Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.

The Black Cats have been making ‘regular checks’ on the ex-Liverpool academy gem ahead of the mid-season transfer window and could look to make an early swoop for his signature.

The Verdict: Get it done

With Dennis Cirkin the only recognised left-back in the senior squad at the moment, Tony Mowbray’s Sunderland are in desperate need of strengthening in that area, especially given that the 20-year-old has had some injury problems this season.

Given Glennon’s form in 2022/23, he could be the perfect fit for the left-back role and would no doubt be eager to impress in the Championship, which is a couple of divisions above the level at which he is playing now.

Also, the 22-year-old shares the same agent as four players at the Stadium of Light, so this is a deal which could be pushed through quickly with the right transfer fee.
