Sunderland journalist James Hunter was left criticising the performance of Patrick Roberts in their 2-0 loss away at Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

The Lowdown: Disappointing defeat

It was disappointing for Alex Neil's team as they went out of the Cup at the first hurdle, especially to a side in the division below them in League One, as the Owls got their revenge for last year's playoffs.

Goals from Dennis Adeniran and Sylla Sow ensured a comfortable night for the hosts in the end, as they go marching on to the next round of the competition.

The Latest: Roberts criticised

Writing in his player ratings piece for The Chronicle, Hunter was particularly critical of Roberts' performance, giving him a mere 5/10 overall rating, the joint-lowest out of any Black Cats player.

The journalist claimed that he 'made no impact on the game whatsoever', in what was a frustrating night for him and his teammates.

The Verdict: Not his best

Roberts was certainly not at his best for the Stadium of Light outfit, as he was substituted off for youngster Caden Kelly with his team still chasing the game.

The Englishman was pretty anonymous in an attacking sense as Hunter alluded to, recording no shots or dribbles, while he was also unsuccessful with half of his crosses (SofaScore).

On the ball, he lost out on 70% of his duels, and gave possession away 12 times.

Nonetheless, Roberts will know that he has to perform better if the Wearsiders are to bounce back over the weekend.
