Sunderland: David Unsworth pleased to see Morgan Feeney signing for Black Cats

Sunderland: David Unsworth pleased to see Morgan Feeney signing for Black Cats - Sunderland News

Everton coach David Unsworth has commented on defender Morgan Feeney’s completed move to Sunderland.

As the 2020/21 season fast approaches, Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson is looking to improve his squad, bringing in the likes of Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien. Following those two deals, the completion of Feeney’s move to the Stadium of Light now has the Black Cats squad looking more prepared for the new term.

Feeney, who had been training with the Black Cats this summer, left Everton in June when his contract at Goodison Park expired.

The 21-year-old defender spent time on loan with Tranmere during the 2019/20 season, whilst also making 12 appearances for Everton’s under-23 side in Premier League 2, and has experience at international level for England’s under-17, under-18 and under-19 sides.

Unsworth, who coached Feeney at Goodison Park, told Everton’s official website that he would be paying a close eye on the defender’s move and subsequent performances for the Black Cats. The Toffees’ academy manager said:

“He phoned me [on Friday] night and we had a lovely conversation.

“I’m thrilled, because I spoke to Phil Parkinson a week or two ago and he asked me about him and I couldn’t have sung his praises any more. It was like I was his agent!

“I’m glad Phil has decided to take him because he’s not just a wonderful player, he’s a wonderful man. He’s been a wonderful player and skipper for me over the past couple of years.

“I’m sure, given the right opportunities, Morgan will do very well there. Sunderland are getting a top player, a top professional, and they’re getting a leader.

“It’s a wonderful club, wonderful history, great fanbase. A proper club. I’ll be a Sunderland fan this year!”

Feeney featured for his new club at the weekend as Sunderland beat Gateshead 3-1 in a pre-season friendly.

Those are big compliments for Feeney from Unsworth and they seem to bode very well for what awaits at Sunderland.

It will be interesting to see if the young defender can establish himself as a first team player and back up Unsworth’s comments over the coming months. If so, Parkinson seems to have quite a gem on his hands.
