Flocking to Twitter, many Sunderland fans were less than impressed with the performance of Leon Dajaku during their 2-1 win over Cambridge United on Saturday.
Lee Johnson’s side are currently in the middle of a very tight race for automatic promotion, with just six points separating ninth place from top spot in the League One table. Points are precious with a plethora of teams currently well in contention to climb up the Football League ladder and into England’s second tier for the 2022/23 campaign.
After a disappointing 1-1 draw away to relegation battlers Shrewsbury last weekend, Sunderland got right back on track with a 2-1 victory over Cambridge.
An early own goal courtesy of Dimitar Mitov got the Black Cats off to a perfect start before Sam Smith levelled for the home side on 27 minutes.
However, it didn’t take long for Sunderland to restore their lead, with playmaker Nathan Broadhead netting just under 10 minutes later. The score stayed that way for the rest of the match as Johnson’s men got back to winning ways.
Sunderland fans slam Dajaku…
Despite a positive afternoon in terms of the final score, one man who attracted criticism from some Mackems supporters was loanee Dajaku.
The 20-year-old, currently on a temporary spell from Union Berlin, ranked as Sunderland’s lowest-rated player by a considerable distance after earning an underwhelming 6.1/10 rating from SofaScore.
Losing possession 24 times in total, the former Bayern Munich man found just 20% of his crosses whilst only completing a quarter of his attempted dribbles. Also, the 2019/20 Bundesliga winner won a meagre four of his 13 ground duels at the Abbey Stadium and was largely kept under wraps by Cambridge’s backline. (SofaScore)
Taking all this into account, it’s little wonder that some supporters believed his performance was ‘bang average’.
Check out some of their verdicts below:
“Dajaku doesn’t convince me. Too often when he got the ball he did nothing proactive with it. Broadhead and Stewart worked well together, Big Ross ran his socks off today. I like Pritch, he’s busy and always offers an option, you can see his quality, but gives the ball away 2/3”
“From what I’ve seen so far from Hoffman and Dajaku no way would I be making their loans permanent, bang average at League One”
“Dajaku is painful bad”
“Tell you what mind. What on earth did Bayern ever see in Dajaku?”
“Dajaku really is useless”
“Keep Broadhead fit and we’ll go up. Gooch was mustard today. Dajaku less said the better. Dan Neil just the usual Rolls Royce performance”
