Sunderland's Jack Clarke ‘apologised in the dressing room’ after picking up his fifth booking of the season during the Championship game against Luton Town at the weekend and duly incurring a suspension, according to Chronicle Live's James Hunter.

The Lowdown: Suspension triggered

The Black Cats earned a 1-1 draw against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, but the 21-year-old was on the receiving end of a needless yellow card in added time for kicking the ball away in frustration after committing a foul.

As a result, it means that the winger must serve a one-match suspension and will miss the upcoming clash against Huddersfield on Wednesday night.

The Latest: Clarke’s apology

Taking to Twitter, Hunter revealed that, immediately after Saturday's match, Clarke expressed remorse to his Black Cats team-mates for his actions which will see him omitted from the squad in midweek.

Sharing a corresponding article for Chronicle Live, the journalist wrote: “Jack Clarke apologised in the dressing room after picking up a booking which means he will miss Wednesday's trip to Huddersfield.”

The Verdict: Blow for Sunderland

Sunderland not having Clarke available for selection in midweek will come as a sucker punch to Tony Mowbray, who will know what a huge impact the 21-year-old has on the Wearsiders.

The Yorkshire native has racked up ten goal contributions in just 17 league appearances this season and currently averages 1.9 dribbles, 1.8 key passes and 1.6 shots per game, placing him among the top three in the squad for each metric (WhoScored).

The one positive from this situation is that Clarke will only be missing one match, so at least he’ll be able to make a quick return to action against Cardiff next weekend.
