Sunderland target Jerry Yates has completed a move to Blackpool, according to their official website.
With the 2019/20 League One season coming to a sudden end, Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson will enter the transfer window under increasing pressure to bring in some new faces after failing for a second successive season to gain promotion.
Former Swindon Town striker Yates was linked with a potential move to the Stadium of Light, with the Wearsiders reportedly interested in a move for the 23-year-old last month.
Yates netted 13 goals in 31 games on loan with the Robins in League Two during the 2019/20 season before returning to parent club Rotherham.
Sunderland’s interest in the striker was shared by League One rivals Blackpool and a report from Football Insider on Tuesday morning revealed that the striker had undergone a medical with Neil Critchley’s side after the clubs agreed on a six-figure fee.
Further to the report by Football Insider, Blackpool confirmed the deal which will see the striker sign a three-year deal with the option of an extension. Rotherham will receive a transfer sum for Yates after triggering an option to extend the striker’s contract upon his return from Swindon.
One thing Sunderland need to do is find a regular goalscorer this summer – Charlie Wyke was their top-scoring centre-forward in 2019/20 with only six goals – and it will likely be frustrating to fans that they have now missed out on Yates, especially given that he is joining another club in League One.
Little is happening at the Stadium of Light in terms of players coming in and it remains to be seen what develops.
