Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has been blown away by the impression made by Aiden O’Brien since he arrived at the club this summer.
Sunderland face Bristol Rovers in the League One opener this coming Saturday (12/09) and the 26-year-old will undoubtedly expect to play a part at the Stadium of Light.
O’Brien netted his first goal for the Black Cats earlier this week as Phil Parkinson’s side breezed past Aston Villa’s under-21 side in the EFL Trophy, which also saw Charlie Wyke (2), Danny Graham, Morgan Feeney, Josh Scowen, Max Power and George Dobson find the back of the net.
When asked by Football Insider if he had been impressed by O’Brien’s start on Wearside, Phillips said: “A really good player.
“He looks sharp, looks lively and this weekend I would go with O’Brien and Graham straight away. It looks like those two could strike a good partnership.
“Both can score goals – one is lively and the other has the experience in Graham. There may be a partnership in waiting between those two.”
Following the game against Rovers on Saturday, Sunderland will then turn their attentions to the following fixture against promotion rivals Oxford United.
Aiden O’Brien could be exactly what Sunderland need, indeed he has a very solid record at League One level with 23 goals and nine assists in his 95 appearances to date.
It would be wise not to get carried away if you are a Black Cats fan, time and time again over the last few seasons, signing have been made that have initially excited but failed in the long run – look at Will Grigg as an example, he has really struggled to score goals since his arrival.
Let’s just hope O’Brien is not another one of these.
