Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has said that he expects Brandon Taylor to shine for the club next season.
The Gateshead-born defender didn’t feature for the first team during the 2019/20 season under Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson but played regularly for the club’s under-23 side, making a total of 16 Premier League 2 appearances.
With his previous contract due to expire in June 2020, concerns had developed over his future at Sunderland, with Premier League clubs Everton, Leicester City and Southampton all linked (via TEAMtalk and 90min.com).
However, the centre-back opted to remain on Wearside, penning a new and improved deal which will see him remain at the club until next summer at the very least.
Phillips, who is vocal about various developments at Sunderland through Football Insider, said that he thinks Taylor could now go on and become a first team regular at the Stadium of Light.
“I expect him to feature heavily next season, especially as he is a young player that has already had a run out,” he said.
“Phil Parkinson will have done his homework and that is why they have given him another year.
“Given the current situation Sunderland are in, a young player that already has experience and that is not going to cost the earth can only be a good thing. I expect him to play a big part.”
Following the signing of his new contract, Taylor revealed that his aim and desire to challenge for a first team place at the club.
Taylor has made no secret of his first team ambitions at Sunderland and, having featured regularly at under-23 level last term, the senior side is the next natural step for him.
Having had Premier League interest, it seems that the defender could be destined for bigger things from next summer, when his current contract comes to an end. Until then, Sunderland should make the most of his talent rather than be left wondering what might have been if he departs without being a proper chance to impress under Parkinson.
