Sunderland first team regular Luke O’Nien has revealed his excitement after seeing both Jack Diamond and Daniel Neil make an impression in training.
The Black Cats enter the 2020/21 season with pressure weighing on their shoulders after failing for a second consecutive year to gain promotion to the Championship from League One.
Manager Phil Parkinson has added some new faces to his squad this summer, with the likes of Remi Matthews and Aiden O’Brien coming in. Those arrivals have enhanced the Sunderland squad but it is the two young players who have caught O’Nien’s eye.
Diamond spent time on loan with Harrogate Town last term and helped them secure a historic promotion to the Football League, whilst Neil has been gradually progressing through the club’s youth sides.
Both have impressed during Sunderland’s pre-season fixtures which have seen wins over Gateshead, Carlisle United and Harrogate Town.
“Dan has been exceptional right throughout pre-season. Every day in training, he’s like a dancer with those magic feet. He’s creating and scoring goals in training all the time.
“There are a few of the youngsters who have been impressing. Jack Diamond has come back and done really well, so we have that healthy competition.
“The gaffer doesn’t know his team yet, so everyone has one more week of training to be at their absolute max and make sure they get that shirt.”
It is exciting for Parkinson and Sunderland fans to have the likes of Diamond and Neil coming through to the first team and catching the eye.
Both have made a good impression so far this summer and, with their desire and youthful energy, Sunderland could have two real gems who could help towards a promotion at the third time of asking.
