Following on from Parkinson’s recent comments about potential transfer activity before the deadline, Smith has given his opinion on the who could come in and what areas of the squad could be improved.
Penning his thoughts via a latest Q&A session with Sunderland Echo, Smith discussed various aspects, with the left-back area in particular being mentioned in need of an improvement.
“There will be one or two more before the window shuts.
“Parkinson is relatively happy with his squad on the whole, but he’s still keen for some more depth in key areas.
“One of the main positions still to be filled is at left wing-back.
“Denver Hume has started the season well, has a big future in that position and is going to play a huge amount (probably the vast majority) of football over the course of the campaign.
“There’s a recognition, though, that cover and competition is both sensible and a necessity.
“There are targets under consideration, but the sense I have is that there’s a desire not to commit immediately, given that there isn’t a huge amount of room to manoeuvre in terms of the salary cap rules.
“I think Sunderland want a strong idea of what is available in other positions, before deciding exactly what deal they do in terms of that cover for Hume.
“Clearly, a decision will have to be made at some stage.
“Don’t be surprised if there’s one or two U21 players arriving from left-field either. The attitude very much seems to be that they can be bonus additions and if the deal is right, it makes sense to have a bit of a gamble in the current climate.”
Sunderland’s 2020/21 season began with an opening day draw against Bristol Rovers before they made it four points out of a possible six with a win over Oxford United on Saturday ahead of next weekend’s home clash against Peterborough.
Smith touched on the left-back role possibly being improved before the transfer deadline and it is an area that Sunderland may seek to target in the coming days.
Whether or not the options are available in the market, though, remains to be seen; and in a constrained financial marketplace, it will be interesting to see just who Parkinson opts to try and sign in the rest of the transfer window.
