Sunderland community website Roker Report have been looking ahead to the new season, with several writers predicting whether or not this will be the season when promotion to the Championship is secured.
Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson goes into the season with huge expectation on his soulders after failing to gain promotion from League One to the Championship last term. After finishing eighth in England’s third tier, the onus will be on Parkinson to turn things around and at least mount a challenge for a play-off place.
With the new season fast approaching, focus is now turning to the opening league game on September 12 when they face Bristol Rovers.
Various writers gave their thoughts to Roker Report on Sunderland’s potential to gain promotion to the Championship, with some rather polarised opinions on where the Black Cats will end the season.
“At the time of writing, I believe that Sunderland will finish in the playoffs,” wrote Phil West, whilst Ian Bendelow remain slightly reserved in his comments, saying: “Anywhere from 3rd to 15th wouldn’t shock me at all.”
Parkinson has added some new faces to his squad over the summer in what will hopefully represent improvement across several areas of the pitch, as the likes of Aiden O’Brien, Morgan Feeney, Remi Matthews and Bailey Wright have all signed permanent deals.
The contrasting opinions of the likes of West and Bendelow indicate how hard it is to predict with accuracy just how Sunderland will do this season.
Predicting how the Black Cats will finish the campaign is a guessing game, given the disappointing end to 2019/20 and the uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership.
Time will tell if Parkinson can prove his doubters wrong…
